The ffusion project
‘The ffusion project’ was borne out of David Cummins’ interest in the music and cultures of the world we live in.
Many artists have created masterpieces of world fusion music. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page wrote and recorded a collection of great songs with local musicians in Marrakesh, Morocco back in 1994; One Giant Leap’s Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman actively collaborated with artists and musicians from around the world when they produced their fusion album of the same name in 2002; Banco De Gaia with his techno and ambient compositions that became the outstanding ‘Last Train to Lhasa in 1995 and many many more.
‘The ffusion project’ is following in the footsteps of these giants, creating music that is relevant today, blending the music of disparate cultures, disparate genres, into a new musical whole.
Over a period of two years up to the end of 2023, I worked on a portfolio bringing together the music of different cultures, different genres and different styles. Out of this work has evolved ‘the ffusion project’, a collection of compositions that bring together the unique iso-polyphonic singing of Albanian folk culture with the alternative and progressive rock genres that have been the backbone of so much of my music.
To reach this stage, I’ve explored, written and recorded jazz, folk, pop, indie and of course progressive rock music. I’ve been inspired by some of the greats, as well as some of the amazing session musicians I’ve worked with, to blend together the instrumentation and vocals of arabic music, choral and gregorian singing and chanting, south american indian chanting and drumming and so much more with my own style of music. Some of this music has been released as ‘the ffusion project – portfolio‘.
For the ffusion project I travelled to Albania to record the iso-polyphonic singing group ‘Thesaret Labe’ in their own environment as well as in the studio in Tirana. The result is the collection of tracks released as 'the ffusion project - Albanian Polyphony' which I hope celebrates this unique style of music.
