Album review – PR
Manchester-based progressive rock artist David Cummins returns this March with Galleries, a reflective and musically expansive album exploring how the people and moments in our past shape who we become. Rooted in progressive rock but imbued with an ambient, atmospheric sensibility, the record captures an artist building emotional depth into every track while continuing to evolve his sound.
The title was inspired by the poignant track “Galleries of Ghosts,” a song about the imprint our histories leave on us. “ David. That theme runs throughout the album — songs that speak of past and future, personal connections, and our relationship with the wider world.
While Galleries retains the intricate arrangements and lyrical sensitivity familiar to longtime listeners, it introduces a gentler production style and new collaborators. Among them are vocalist Niamh Connor and guitarist Mike Weaver, who bring rich emotion to a reimagined cover of In Dreams by Jai Jagdish. Weaver, also a member of the David’s acoustic quartet Derailed, adds warmth and texture, while Connor’s harmonies elevate the song’s spiritual tone.
Regular contributors Altin Gjoni and Pete Smith once again lend their seasoned musicianship. Gjoni’s guitar work – fluid, expressive, and technically superb – adds dynamic lift to several tracks. Smith, the bass player for Derailed, reinterprets David’s original bass lines, infusing each song with rhythmic drive and fresh melodic instinct.
Creatively, Galleries began lyrically before taking shape in the studio. Early demos allowed the David to explore arrangements and soundscapes before inviting his collaborators to contribute remotely and in person. The project will be mastered by Ste Kerry, ensuring a cohesive sonic landscape across the album’s emotionally charged collection of songs.
Visually, Galleries extends its conceptual thread through its artwork. After sketching early ideas, David used AI image‑generation tools such as Cici, DALL·E, and Firefly to experiment and refine the visual identity. Drawing on his background as a designer and photographer, he approached the artwork as a creative exploration of memory and emotion, mirroring the album’s reflective core.
“Galleries represents another step in my musical journey,” reflects David. “It’s where I am now - who knows where it will lead next.”
The record touches on wide‑ranging themes — from music and literature to spirituality and family. One standout track, written for his daughter during her college exams, captures the album’s essence: connection, encouragement, and emotional honesty.
Galleries will be released worldwide in March 2026 on the 1043 recordings Label
